Before writing Silent Spring, her best-known book, Carson made her mark as an environmental journalist with the Atlantic essay “Undersea.” The essay was later expanded into her first book, Under the Sea-Wind. Carson’s work is credited with advancing the environmental movement and leading to the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency.
