Young, Gay, HIV-Positive—and a Pastor

Dennis Massenberg says that he used to be a "church hopper," someone who bounced from congregation to congregation—he stayed when things were good and he consented to the theology, before inevitably departing for somewhere else. For a long time, he believed that homosexuality could be changed, so he fervently denied his proclivities. Now, Massenberg is the pastor of a church that he started, one that is intent on accepting gay people and giving them a place to worship. "I'm preaching a gospel that's contrary to popular belief," he says in this moving documentary, Purpose in the Pulpit, by Carter McCall. "I became an activist."
