Opal Tometi, Co-founder of the #BlackLivesMatter movement, talks with Atlantic editor Scott Stossel about the origins of the political movement. Tometi says the campaign was incentivized by a need to call attention to the "crisis in our democracy" currently taking place—a crisis of poverty, discrimination, and unemployment in black communities.
This discussion took place at the 2015 Washington Ideas Forum.
