Journalist Theo Padnos was held hostage for nearly two years by the Syrian al-Nusra front before being released. In that time, his family participated in an exhaustive search for him, alongside the families of four other missing Americans in Syria. Theo, his mother Nancy Curtis, cousin Amy Rosen, and The New Yorker staff writer Lawrence Wright, author of "Five Hostages," sit down with Atlantic editor in chief James Bennet to discuss efforts to locate Theo in his time as prisoner.

This discussion took place at the 2015 Washington Ideas Forum.
