“I wear things that are appropriate for the occasion, but in the style of 1907.” Chances are if you live in close proximity to any hip, urban enclave, you know somebody whose fashion embodies this aesthetic. It needs no further explanation; you know it when you see it.
Produced by famed fashion photographer Scott Schuman in partnership with ACTA film, the candle-lit video below features a cocktail party with memorable individuals who appeared on the fashion blog, The Sartorialist. Whether draped in a $3,000 designer coat or traipsing to the subway in vintage trousers and high-tops, those featured on Schuman’s blog become instant celebrities. At one point in the video, partygoer Michael -- to whom credit for the post’s opening quotation belongs -- describes how he met his Swedish girlfriend after she recognized him from his photograph. Schuman has always hoped to create a mutual dialogue about fashion and its relationship to daily life. Since its creation three years earlier, the gorgeous blog has gained such notoriety that the select few featured in the video are celebrated in fashionable circles. As one of the young women in the video reassures us, Schuman prefers taking “natural” photographs of his subjects on location in New York, Milan, Paris, and elsewhere. They are not models; they are just like you - in really amazing clothes.
