The New York Times has been pushing the boundaries of traditional news coverage with features that blend data and design, like this eye-popping series on the 2012 Olympics. In the short documentary, All the News That's Fit to Post (now a couple years old), the publisher Gestalten interviews two of the Times' graphics editors, Steven Duenes and Archie Tse. They describe the process of gathering and distilling information and how they make the case for graphic content as newsworthy.
This segment was produced by Ole Wagner, Sven Ehmann, Andrea Cadorin, and Michael Tyburski. Gestalten, a Berlin-based publishing company, produces an ongoing documentary series on art and design related to their books. They suggest three books on design and print media to check out: Visual Storytelling, Turning Pages, and Data Flow 2.
