Everything Is a Remix is a sweeping, multipart documentary series about the importance of remixing -- copying, transforming, and combining ideas -- in culture and technology. The fourth and final segment, System Failure, examines the history and incentives that shaped current intellectual property laws, making the argument that they no longer serve their original purpose -- copyright and patent laws block, rather than promote, innovation. The series is directed by Kirby Ferguson, who talks about the project in an interview with the Atlantic Video channel here. Don't miss previous episodes of the series, on music, movies, and technology, here, and Ferguson's infographic take on the SOPA and PIPA anti-piracy legislation here.
On the heels of Everything Is a Remix, which was self-funded with the support of viewer contributions, Ferguson is raising funding for his next series on Kickstarter. This Is Not a Conspiracy Theory will use a similar format to discuss politics. For more information, or to support the project, visit the Kickstarter page.
