Tired of blogging from jail, John McAfee would like nothing more than to pack his bags, ditch his young Belize girlfriend and return to the beautiful sandy, not behind bars, shores of Miami beach.
In a phone interview with Reuters, McAfee said he wants to come back to America. "I wish I could just pack my bags and go to Miami," McAfee said. In a post on his blog on Friday, McAfee said he contacted the U.S. Embassy in Guatemala but they told him there's nothing they can do.
McAfee was living peacefully in his compound in Belize until authorities went looking for him in relation to the murder of his neighbor. He then went into hiding, and crossed the border into Guatemala thinking he could avoid persecution there. It was a great idea until Vice accidentally revealed his exact location.
Except he was arrested anyway, except not for murder. He was taken in for illegally crossing the border, and now Guatemalan authorities are waiting to decide what to do with him. Complicating the matter, Guatemala and Belize are not friends. To his credit, McAfee seems to regrets complicating the already complicated relationship between the two countries. "I don't think I fully understood the political situation. I'm an embarrassment to the Guatemalan government and I'm jeopardizing their relationship with Belize," he said.
If only he knew seeking political asylum on Guatemalan beaches would be so complicated he would have just booked a flight to the U.S. instead...
