NASA has been tracking a major sunspot, Active Region 1429, which released this X5.4 solar flare on March 6. "Stay tuned for more from this very active sunspot," NASA says.

The spike in solar activity could have major consequences for life on Earth, Gregg Easterbrook writes in "Star Power," in The Atlantic, but so far the solar storms' impact here has not been as disruptive as some have predicted.
