Sometimes it seems like all we're ever doing is asking people to friend or follow or watch or track us on all of the various social networking services that we've cobbled together. Alterian and Sevans Strategy teamed up to figure out which of what they're calling the "social asks" are the most popular, the most used. To do this, a team of researchers ran keyword searches on a number of platforms, including YouTube, LinkedIn, Blogger, Flickr and others. The most popular ask, they found, was "follow me." Surprisingly, most of the time it was relayed on Twitter.
"Although you might assume that the only people who would read the message 'follow me' would be people who already follow you," Mashable notes, "Sarah Evans, president of Sevans Strategy, points out that the message can also be retweeted and found in searched."
The Alterian and Sevans Strategy research team pulled together all of its data to build the infographic displayed below.
Infographics are always a bit of a hodgepodge of statistics culled from a variety of sources. Here, we sort through the clutter and pull out some of our favorite facts and figures:
- Over the month of March 2011, the research team counted more than 3.3 million social asks. That comes out to nearly 108,000 asks per day and more than 750,000 asks per week.
- Most social asks were made over Twitter (95.9 percent). And only 2.2 percent of social asks occurred on Facebook.
- The gender divide was nearly equal, with women making only 0.3 percent more total social asks than men. But 3.1 percent more women ask on Twitter than men, and 37.4 percent more men ask on Facebook than women.
- Indiana, surprisingly, was the top U.S. state for total social asks, accounting for more than 101,000, or 16.2 percent of the total. California came in second place, with 11.7 percent of the total, and New York, Texas and Louisiana followed in positions three through five.
