My inherent British dislike of drawing attention to myself means it's probably been 15 years since I last used the horn. I prefer to use my eyes and brakes instead, and as a result I have a much greater mental buffer zone around me when driving. Ninety-nine percent of the times I hear someone use the horn, it's because they didn't think that there might be a good reason why the traffic is stalled (like people crossing the road) or didn't realize heavy traffic would force the next car to encroach into his lane. Staying off the horn forces the driver to pay attention to these details and leave a greater buffer zone; it forces defensive driving. My first 10 years in a foreign country, I wrongly thought my UK license was valid--10 years illegal!--but I was never pulled over due to defensive driving.
