For our annual gift guide, asked contributors and assorted luminaries to tell us what's high on their holiday wish list -- and what charity they'd like their friends to support.

What's on their wish lists?

Seth Mnookin, journalist and lecturer in MIT's Graduate Program in Science Writing. His most recent book is The Panic Virus: A True Story of Medicine, Science, and Fear
On his list: A digital-audio converter

How about a product that's sold out but will hopefully be available again soon? I'll list the Anedio D1 DAC, a decently good digital-audio converter. For the past several years, I've been collecting high-resolution digital audio files. For the most part, I've been listening to them using an Audio-GD Sparrow headphone amp and AKG-701 headphones. The Anedio would let me actually listen to those files on my stereo.

Mnookin's holiday charity: Coney Island Prep, which is a school my brother started and runs.
