For our annual gift guide, asked contributors and assorted luminaries to tell us what's high on their holiday wish list -- and what charity they'd like their friends to support.

What's on their wish lists?

Carol Browner, lawyer, environmentalist, and businesswoman; former director of the White House Office of Energy and Climate Change Policy, and Administrator of the EPA
On her list: A smartphone thermostat app

A new app from Honeywell and OPower that will let me manage my home thermostat the same way I manage my music and photos - on my iPhone from wherever I am. The initial platform includes a Web-connected programmable thermostat to help utilities boost energy-efficiency programs, driving deeper savings in the home and maximizing return on investment. The technology will measure, analyze, and report homeowners' electricity use, including detailed information from the thermostat, which controls heating and cooling systems - equipment that accounts for almost 50 percent of all residential energy consumption.
