For our annual gift guide, asked contributors and assorted luminaries to tell us what's high on their holiday wish list -- and what charity they'd like their friends to support.

What's on their wish lists?

Rye Barcott, former Marine, author of It Happened on the Way to War
On his list: Portable solar panels

In the Marines we called moving over long distances by foot "humping," and the heavier the gear, the harder the hump. Now that I'm out of active duty, I call it hiking. For this holiday season I would like to get some of the lightweight, portable solar panels that Marines now deploy with overseas. This way I can ditch my batteries for the rest of my hikes. That's good for the environment, and good for my back.
