The Senate voted to reject an amendment on Wednesday, sponsored by Democratic Senator Brian Schatz of Hawaii, saying that "climate change is real and human activity significantly contributes to climate change."

50 senators voted in favor of the amendment, including five Republicans: Sens. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire, Susan Collins of Maine, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Mark Kirk of Illinois

49 senators voted to reject the amendment, which failed when it fell one vote shy of the 60 votes needed to pass.
