No one has ideas about the blood moon like World Net Daily does. The blood moon, in case you missed it last night, is a dramatic name for a lunar eclipse that briefly makes the light reflected back from the moon to earth appear red. We're going to have four such lunar eclipses in a short period of time, starting with last night's. While that's not a particularly unusual astronomical event, having theories about the blood moon "tetrad" is a great way to sell books. Enter the contributors of World Net Daily.
The best theory so far is definitely the one that involves President Obama. The blood moon, the theory goes, is a warning to Obama because he said he has a “pen and phone" if Congress fails to take action on key issues facing the country. To connect the dots, WND turned to an idea from some guy who wrote a book called Blood Moons: Decoding the Imminent Heavenly Signs:
there are 'flashing red warning lights' in the heavens that should command peoples’ attention right now, because the one behind those warnings, God, had 'more than a pen and a phone in his hand.'
Pastor Mark Blitz adds that the blood moon is also a clever jab about "red lines" and Israel, basically aimed at Obama from God:
I believe that the blood moons have great historic and prophetic significance just as they did following 1948 and 1967. In the book of Joel it mentions three times about the sun and the moon going dark and in context it also mentions Divine wrath against all countries that want to divide or part the land of Israel,” he said.
“I believe the moons are like flashing red warning lights at a heavenly intersection saying to Israel as well as the nations they will be crossing heavenly red lines and if they do, they will understand as Pharaoh did on Passover night 3,500 years ago that the Creator backs up what He says.
“Like Pharaoh the leaders and pundits of today will realize when it comes to crossing the red lines of the Creator of the universe he has more than a pen and a phone in his hand.”
In case you were wondering, Blitz is repeatedly quoted at length in WND's archives over the last several months. There's the piece that ties in his theory that the moon is the fulfillment of a biblical prophecy to tax day:
An extraordinary chain of events in the heavens begins this Passover, April 14, and the red in your bank account thanks to the IRS will be nothing compared to the red you can see in the heavens.
It’s called a “blood moon tetrad,” a series of lunar eclipses that, when it has occurred before, has been linked to significant events for Israel.
And your run-of-the-mill belief that natural disasters are signs from an angry God (and again, that the blood moon means Israel is under threat):
We are in a “hot” cycle, as it were, with 2014/2015 another season of the blood moons upon us. Consider that this same phenomenon existed in 1492 when the Jews were expelled from Spain; in 1948 when Israel was reborn; and in the famed Six Day War of 1967. With the Iranian threat hanging over the Jewish state, not to mention other dramatic situations for Israel, observers of the blood moon story are naturally on pins and needles.
It should be noted that Blitz isn't the only Blood Moon theory guy selling books to the WND crowd. Pastor John Hagee, a well-known and very controversial Texas pastor whose last moment in the limelight was probably his participation in Rick Perry's prayer rally.
So why all the blood moon fuss? Mainly because the eclipses happen to fall on four Jewish holidays in a row:
- April 15, 2014 – Passover
- October 8, 2014 – Feast of Tabernacles
- April 4, 2015 – Passover
- September 28, 2015 – Feast of Tabernacles
That's probably in part because the calendar used to set Jewish holidays primarily follows the lunar cycle (our calendar, for comparison, is primarily solar). But never mind that.
