Wind turbines killed more than half a million bats last year.National Journal

Wind power may be good for the environment, but it's come at the expense of more than a few bats, reports the Los Angeles Times.

A study published in BioScience found that 600,000 bats were killed in 2012 by U.S. wind turbines, and its author said the "estimate of bat fatalities is probably conservative." The highest concentrations of bat kills were found in the Appalachian Mountains.

Bat populations are not easily tracked, but even without firm figures, scientists say their numbers are decreasing. The study noted the importance of bats for eating insects and pollinating plants.
