Comcast and Wal-Mart Stores top the list of the 10 best companies for Latinas to work for, according to LATINA Style magazine, a business-focused publication. Rounding out the list are Verizon, Deloitte, Marriott International, Prudential Financial, Kaiser Permanente, AT&T, Johnson & Johnson, and Kraft Food.
The companies were selected based on responses from a list of question by LATINA Style, which inquired about such factors as the number of Latina executives, Latina retention, mentoring programs, educational opportunities, alternative work policies, employee benefits, women's issues, job retraining, and affinity groups.
The magazine identified the top 50 companies in its annual Top 50 places to work for Hispanic women based on 2011 company data.
"Latinas are extremely loyal to the companies they work for, so it is essential that they make the right choice in selecting their employers," said Robert E. Bard, president and CEO of LATINA Style. It is our job to assist them in identifying the companies that will provide them with the best opportunities to succeed." The annual report is in its 15th year.
Comcast, headquartered in Philadelphia, was the "2012 Company of the Year." The top 50 companies will be recognized during a February event in Washington.
Latinas, who account for 8.1 million people in the U.S. labor force, are overrepresented in the low-wage job sectors, such as sales, home care, food preparation, and person care. A 2012 study, "Trabajadoras: Challenges and Conditions of Latina Workers in the United States," by the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement, found that only 24.1 percent of employed Latinas work in management positions and the professional sector. Most of them work in education, training, and library jobs.
