Four days after the chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Gregory Jaczko, announced his plans to resign, President Obama has selected George Mason University professor Allison Macfarlane to fill a seat on the five-member NRC.

Macfarlane has been an associate professor of environmental science and policy since 2006, and was a member of the president's blue ribbon commission on nuclear waste that issued a report earlier this year. She was previously a research associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an associate professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
