Rick Santorum's last-ditch campaign strategy for the Michigan primary has him united with an unlikely constituency: prankster Democrats. The Santorum campaign confirmed Monday afternoon that they have initiated robo-calls encouraging Democrats to vote for Santorum in Tuesday's "game-changing" Michigan primary because it's an open primary that doesn't require one be registered as a Republican to vote. Santorum's spokesperson tells The Washington Post's Aaron Blake, "We know that Rick’s message of balance budget and getting people back to work resonates with Reagan Democrats," which sounds, uh, wildly disingenuous. We think this is more of a "hey every vote counts and we'll face the Democrats when we get there," kind of calculation.

In this somewhat sneaky effort, Santorum has an ally in the pundits who suggest a win for the "unelectable" culture warrior in the nomination contests is a win for Barack Obama in the general election. Talking Points Memo notes that liberal news site Daily Kos had already organized its own campaign to encourage Michigan Democrats to vote Santorum, even before Santorum joined on.
