Alabama's Crazy Politics

With ads like this, this, and this, Alabama is the hands-down winner of this cycle's state-with-the-most-enjoyable-political-stories award. But I'm embarrassed to admit that amid all the hoopla, I had not even realized that Roy Moore, the infamous "Ten Commandments Judge," had mounted another campaign for governor of Alabama. Probably my favorite piece I've written for The Atlantic is "Roy and His Rock," a 2005 profile of Moore and the 5,280-lb. hunk of granite he installed in the Alabama Supreme Court building. I had the pleasure--and it truly was a lot of fun--of traveling around the Deep South in a crane truck with Roy's Rock and the wonderful team that hauls it back and forth to Christian conventions. I gather Moore's prospects aren't too bright, but I hope you'll read the piece anyway.
