Jonah Goldberg is one of America's most vocal conservative pundits, with a proven record of castigating Democratic leaders and politicians. But examining a contentious senate race in California for the seat currently held by Barbara Boxer, Goldberg throws his support behind a somewhat surprising candidate: Mickey Kaus.

"The biggest favor I could do for Kaus would be to denounce him with a full-throated blast of right-wing dragon fire," Goldberg says of the Slate blogger-turned-Democratic candidate for senate. But the National Review columnist fesses up: "I can’t do it. I just like and admire the guy too much."

Admittedly, Kaus is not a traditional Democratic politician. The longtime journalist is a political neophyte, and many of his policy positions remain up for debate. Nonetheless, it's startling to see the author of "Liberal Fascism: The Secret History of the American Left" speak so warmly of any Democratic candidate. Though Goldberg disagrees with his politics, he offers a rave review of Kaus the man in comparing him to a former lion of the senate.

Full disclosure: Kaus is way too liberal for me. But that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t be an exhilarating addition to the Senate in the grand tradition of Daniel Patrick Moynihan. Like Moynihan, Kaus is a fearless asker of hard and unwanted questions. He may have the single most finely attuned B.S. detector of anyone in the journalism business — or any other business.
