Egypt And The Saudis
From Sen. John McCain's speech on human dignity today:
"I would insist that our diplomacy actively raise and discourage in our relationships with other countries customs that so degrade and physically threaten people, and explain that the full benefits of friendship with the United States are predicated on a shared respect for the basic right of women and children not to suffer atrocities to their physical and emotional health to protect traditions that should have been ended long ago."
The countries for you reporters on the Straight Talk Express to ask about are Egypt and Saudi Arabia, and to a less extent Jordan.
What does "actively raise and discourage" mean? Is this a different policy than the ones pursued by the Clinton and Bush administrations? Would a McCain administration tie our substantive relationship to progress on human rights?
