3.4 Million New Registrants (Or, Steve Hildebrand's Legacy)

It's an... (cue sound effect) IMPACT story from the Associated Press. (Seriously, that's how the A.P. labels original stories for its subscribers.) The folks at the family wire have analyzed voter registration data from 50 states and have come up with a figure of about 3.4 million newly registered voters. Though many states do not ask for partisan affiliation, it's a safe bet that a plurality of those who chose a party (as opposed to independents, the fastest growing segment) were Democrats. About 2 million people registered during the same period of 2004.
