Friday was the vernal equinox, the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, despite continued wintry conditions in a few places (I'm looking at you, New England). As the sunlight becomes more prevalent, people, plants, and animals are beginning to emerge from their winter modes to step outside, bloom, and otherwise welcome the sunshine. These photos show festivals and glimpses of the new season from around the world, as we shake off the winter and greet the spring.

The agency says it all but "cooked away" the poppies, turning those on the south slope into shriveled orange petals before they had a chance to go to seed. #

Several of the expected 11 whales returned within the past week for what has become an annual feeding event for the small group, a break-off from the spring migration of thousands of the gray whales from the calving lagoons in Mexico to the Bering Sea and then to the waters off Russia. The small group is expected to spend about three months feeding in the waters off the south end of Whidbey Island, Washington, before rejoining the northbound migration in mid-June. #
