What are the Panama papers? As Marina reported last night, “A year-long investigation has revealed millions of classified documents that point to corruption among world leaders, politicians, and others.” Among those named, according to the BBC, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, and Libya’s former leader Muammar Gaddafi. Icelandic Prime Minister Sigmundur Gunnlaugsson is reported to have stored investments in his country’s banks in an offshore company. And, the Guardian reported, associates of Russian President Vladimir Putin secretly moved as much as $2 billion through offshore accounts. Update: More here
Deportations to Turkey begin: One hundred and thirty-six people, mostly Pakistanis, were put aboard ferries on the Greek island of Lesbos and arrived this morning in Dikili, Turkey. In return, 16 Greek refugees arrived in Germany from Greece. The deportations, and arrivals, are part of a deal the EU struck with Turkey under which for each migrant returned to Turkey from EU states, the bloc will accept a legitimate Syrian refugee.
