Another quake in Japan: This one, magnitude 7.1, also struck near Kumamoto, on the southern Japanese island of Kyushu. Yesterday’s 6.2 quake killed nine people in the city.

Possible prosecution for German comedian: Chancellor Angela Merkel has allowed the authorities to prosecute—if they choose to do so—Jan Böhmermann, a satirist who mocked the Turkish leader on TV. Under German law, insulting a foreign leader is an offense and Turkey had complained about the sexually explicit poem.

Czechia: Leaders from the Czech Republic will ask the UN to recognize the new, shorter name.
