Floods in Missouri: The Mississippi River, whose levels swelled over the weekend after deadly tornadoes struck Texas, now threatens to weaken 19 federal levees along its shores. Flood warnings are in effect in Missouri, Illinois, and Oklahoma.

Arrests in Turkey: Police have detained two suspected Islamic State militants in Ankara who authorities believed planned suicide attacks during New Year celebrations in the capital, according to Ankara prosecutor’s office. Update: More here.

Iranian Military Activity Near U.S. Vessels: A U.S. Central Command spokesman said today that Iranian naval vessels conducted rocket tests on Saturday about 1,500 yards from U.S. warships and commercial traffic in the strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea. Commander Kyle Raines in  statement called the military activity “highly provocative.”
