Freddie Gray trial: Closing arguments began today in the trial of Officer William Porter, one of six Baltimore police officers charged in connection with the death of the 25-year-old black man in April. Judge Barry G. Williams told the jurors: “You should not be swayed by sympathy, prejudice or public opinion.”
Another giant merger: Newell Rubbermaid is buying Jarden for more than $15 billion in cash and stock. The move would bring together under one roof such brands as Sharpie, Yankee Candle, and Graco baby strollers.
An attack that wasn’t: This morning, a kindergarten teacher in a Paris suburb claimed he’d been stabbed by a masked man who screamed the attack “was for Daesh.” Prosecutors say he made it up and had inflicted the injuries upon himself. Daesh is another name for the group known as the Islamic State, ISIS or ISIL, one the group is reported to dislike.
