More security for NYE: Cities across the world have stepped up security measures for New Year’s Eve festivities amid concerns of potential terrorist attacks, dispatching higher than usual numbers of police officers, reducing the number of people allowed in certain popular celebration spots, and conducting bag and body searches. Latest arrest of a suspected extremist: Authorities in Brussels and Ankara have detained several people this week who were believed to be planning terrorist attacks in highly populated areas during New Year celebrations. Authorities in New York said this afternoon that police have arrested an alleged Islamic State supporter who allegedly plotted to carry out an armed attack at a bar in Rochester as people rung in the New Year. Emanuel Lutchman, 25, of Rochester, has been charged with attempt to provide material support and resources to the terrorist group.

Obama’s New Year’s resolution: CNN reports the president is expected to announce “in the coming days” new executive action that would expand background checks on gun purchases, just before his final State of the Union address on January 12.
