Jihadi John targeted: Mohammed Emwazi, the member of the Islamic State better known as “Jihadi John,” was the target of U.S. airstrikes in Raqaa, Syria, yesterday, the Pentagon said in a statement.  The Kuwaiti-born Briton appeared in several Islamic State videos that showed the beheadings of hostages. Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook said “we are assessing the results of” the airstrikes, but the BBC and other news organizations are reporting there is a high degree of certainty he was killed. Kurds make gains:  Peshmerga forces are inside Sinjar, Iraq, the Kurdistan Region Security Council said. They are on the second day of a mission to retake the northern Iraqi city from the Islamic State.

Donald Trump unloads: The Republican presidential candidate spent more than 90 minutes attacking his rivals and Democrats, and bemoaning the state of the country. An excerpt from his speech Thursday at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge, Iowa: “How stupid are the people of Iowa to believe this crap?” He was referring to Ben Carson’s autobiography and the retired neurosurgeon’s lead in the polls in Iowa.
