A tentative budget deal: The White House and congressional Republicans have reportedly reached a tentative two-year agreement that would see spending increase slightly, some social programs cut, and the debt ceiling raised. The deal needs approval from the House and Senate. Congressional Republicans are already criticizing it. Update: More here

Challenging China: A U.S. destroyer entered waters near the Spratly Islands, which is claimed by China, and a Pentagon spokesman said Chinese officials were not informed of the maneuver. In a commentary, Xinhua, the state-run news agency, called it a “highly irresponsible and dangerous” move.

Quake recovery: Rescue workers in Afghanistan and Pakistan are working to get relief to those affected by yesterday’s magnitude-7.5 earthquake that struck a remote region that borders both countries. The death toll in the quake has risen to more than 300.  

A video of a confrontation: The sheriff’s department in Richland County, South Carolina, is investigating a confrontation between an officer and a female student at the Spring Valley High School. Video of the confrontation posted online appears to show the officer throwing the student across a classroom before restraining her. The student had reportedly refused to leave the classroom when asked. The officer has been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation. Update: More here
