What We're Following This Afternoon

Syrian rebels: Defense Secretary Ash Carter says the U.S. will focus on assisting existing rebel groups in Syria instead of training its own moderate militia—an effort that has shown embarrassing results. Hajj toll: A new count of the death toll at the Hajj is more than twice the official toll. The Associated Press said 1,453 people died in the stampede last month, but the Saudi estimate is 769.

Thabo Sefolosha acquitted: A Manhattan jury deliberated for about an hour and found the Atlanta Hawks guard-forward not guilty on charges of “misdemeanor obstructing government administration, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest” in an incident outside a New York nightclub in April.
