What We're Following This Afternoon

Education secretary out:

CNBC reporter Eamon Javers hears that the deputy secretary, John B. King, Jr., will replace Duncan. Russell recently asked him:

Berman: Are you staying on for the remainder of the president’s term?

Duncan: I’m working hard every day—long way to go!

Kim Davis’s meeting with the pope: Yes, there’s more. The Vatican now says Pope Francis “met with several dozen persons who had been invited by the Nunciature to greet him as he prepared to leave Washington for New York City.” But as Emma points out, the playing down of the meeting shows the Vatican’s “internal fight” over the issue.

Not the greatest job report: Bourree notes the unemployment rate stayed at 5.1 percent, and the economy added 142,000 jobs in September, below estimates. The markets aren’t happy.
