Russian strikes in Syria: Russia carried out a second day of airstrikes in Syria, targeting a group that includes members of the local al-Qaida affiliate. The U.S., which is concerned by Russia’s actions, says the countries will hold military-to-military talks today.

Auto sales surge in September: The big three U.S. automakers saw their best year of sales since 2000. They were partly helped by the fact the Labor Day weekend fell entirely in the last month. In other auto news, union workers rejected a contract negotiated by the United Auto Workers with Fiat Chrysler.
