Migrant crisis: European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker has announced a mandatory resettlement plan for 160,000 asylum-seekers among the EU’s 28 member states. The idea is unpopular: Larger countries like Germany and France support the quotas. Central European nations such as Hungary do not. Update: More here.

Plane catches fire: A London-bound British Airways flight caught fire at Las Vegas airport last night, forcing the evacuation of everyone—157 passengers, three pilots, and 10 cabin crew—on board. An FAA spokesman said the Boeing 777-200’s left engine caught fire before takeoff. British Airways called it a “technical issue.”

U.S. Open: Serena Williams’s quest for a Grand Slam continued. She defeated her sister Venus Williams 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 in the quarterfinal.
