NEWS BRIEFOne San Diego police officer was killed and another wounded late Thursday, the department said. The lone suspect is in custody after a manhunt in Southcrest, a neighborhood in the city.

The second officer is expected to survive, the department said on its Twitter account.

The officers, who have not been identified, were shot as they made a traffic stop late Thursday, police said at a news conference. They immediately called for backup, police said.

The motive for the shootings is unclear, but it comes weeks after officers were targeted and killed in Dallas and Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
