Assad vows to retake all of Syria: The Syrian president’s remarks came in an interview to AFP, the French news agency. “Regardless of whether we can do that or not, this is a goal we are seeking to achieve without any hesitation,” he said. The comments follow an announcement that a “cessation of hostilities” will go into effect next week.

U.K.’s Independent to go digital-only: The announcement was made by Evegny Lebedev, the newspaper’s owner. At its peak in the late 1980s, the Independent’s circulation was about 400,000 copies. It now stands at 40,000. An internal memo from Lebedev, cited by The New York Times, said print publication of the newspaper no longer economically viable.
