An attack by Boko Haram: At least 30 people were killed in the operation on Maiduguri, in northeast Nigeria. It’s the first attack in months by the Islamist militant group, and comes days after President Muhammadu Buhari said Boko Haram had been “technically” defeated.

Holiday spending up: A MasterCard SpendingPulse report said it increased 7.9 percent from a year ago. Online shopping was up 20 percent, the report said.

RIP, Meadowlark Lemon: The Harlem Globetrotter who entertained millions of fans around the world died yesterday in  Scottsdale, Arizona. He was 83.
