Oregon shooting update: Details are emerging this morning about the 26-year-old gunman who opened fire at a community college in Oregon. Various news organizations are identifying him as Chris Harper Mercer. Ten people were killed and seven wounded in the mass shooting at Umpqua Community College. Update: More here

Bahamas battered: Hurricane Joaquin, now a Category Four storm, brought heavy rain and winds to parts of the Bahamas. The storm is expected to weaken slowly starting Saturday as it moves toward the U.S. East Coast. Update: More here

Syria strikes: The U.S.-led coalition in Syria has asked Russia to stop its airstrikes against groups opposed to President Bashar al-Assad. In a joint statement, they said the move “only fuel more extremism.” Update: More here
