“We were best friends, soul mates and ‘sister girls,’ ” McDonnell said after placing her daughter’s favorite stuffed animal on the lectern at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.
Her grieving father Chris McDonnell told his daughter he is “so, so sorry” for not being there to protect her on that horrible day.
He then thanked her for bringing so much love, life and laughter into his life.
“You taught me how to love,” he said.
The New Haven Register noted that Grace and her mother used to call themselves "fashionistas." The programs for the service, which was attended by Anderson Cooper, also included a commemoration to Grace:
Grace loved the beach, seashells and lighthouses. In the funeral’s program it states, “Seashells remind us that every passing light leaves something behind.”
The program adds, “May you always have a shell in your pocket, and sand in your shoes.”
