The New York Times has put together a wonderful interactive graphic depicting the location and quantity of tornado deaths over the last 60 years. The whole thing is well worth exploring. But the snapshot above shows the fatalities in 1953, which up until 2011's tornado season, was the U.S.'s deadliest year, with 519 deaths after disasters in Texas, Michigan and Massachussetts.
