Project: Create characters for the comic strip The Cardboard Valise
Katchor, a celebrated New York illustrator, was the first cartoonist to be awarded a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship. This past March, he published The Cardboard Valise, a collection of the weekly comic strip of the same name and his first book in more than ten years. Here he discusses the rhythm of his work and explains how creates characters—in this case Elijah Salamis and Calvin Heaves.
