Blow, Winter Wind

Nicholas McGegan, a harpsichordist and conductor whose crisp investigations especially of Handel have met with ecstatic reviews and brisk record sales, now turns his mind to re-creations of another sort. His Arcadian Academy revives the name and the concerns of the Roman Accademia dell’Arcadia, an aristocratic society founded on the eve of the eighteenth century to invigorate Italian culture. The new group’s first tour (January 29 to February 8) features one-night visits to Kingston, Rhode Island; Baltimore; Lancaster, Pennsylvania (Franklin and Marshall College); Cleveland; Greenwich. Connecticut; and Washington, D.C. (Dumbarton Oaks). During a two-day stop at the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the group will present an expanded program. In addition to instrumental and vocal music, there are poetry readings and an afternoon of lectures on the themes of love and pastoral. An escape to Arcadia while at home the cold winds blow!
