People of the Sea

by Trude Dothan and Moshe Dothan. Macmillan, $25.00. The Dothans, Israeli professors of archaeology, have worked for years on the remains of the Philistine culture. The Philistines, they maintain in this pleasantly informal report, were far from the barbarous oafs of biblical tradition. Who exactly they were remains a question, but what they made and how they lived and where they traded can be reconstructed in considerable detail. The authors mingle history, excavation finds, and personal experience in an informative account of a people who were, among other things, notably adaptable.
