Secret Lives

by Max Egremont.Dutton! William Abrahams, $17.95. There are four principal characters in Lord Egremont’s novel—a married couple, a homosexual art expert, and a young man who restores paintings. The content of the story, aside from some deadpan social satire, is the erotic or sentimental fantasies of two of these people, the possible fantasies of a third, and the complete impenetrability of the fourth, whose fantasies would presumably be the oddest of the lot. The tale is, in short, an ingenious, provocative psychological teaser.
