Massacre at Ouradour

by Robin Mackness. Random House, $17.95. The author believes, but does not insist, that he has discovered the real reason for a Nazi massacre of inoffensive French villagers shortly after the Normandy landings. Mr. Mackness’s interest in that gruesome affair was aroused by his own, much later participation in a money-smuggling scheme that landed him in a French jail. He is vouched for, rather cautiously, by John Fowles, the well-known and ingenious novelist, a fact that may cause some readers to wonder in what genre this book really belongs.
