Spirit and Ancestor

by Bill Holm. University of Washington , $50.00 and $24.95. In celebration of its hundredth anniversary, the Burke Museum, of Seattle, offers photographs of 100 items from the institution’s enormous collection of Northwest Coast Indian art. The objects range from dance masks to fish hooks, and all of them are, in their separate ways, beautiful. They have been expertly photographed by Eduardo Calderon, and each picture faces a page of text by Bill Holm. Mr. Holm, a veteran authority on Northwest Coast art, has adroitly extended the pedigrees of the individual pieces to encompass history, ethnography, and the principles underlying Indian design. This is a splendidly handsome and informative book about a remarkable culture.
