General A. P. Hill

by James I. Robertson. Random House, $24.95. Ambrose Powell Hill (1825-1865) was one of the Confederacy’s better-known and generally successful commanders. He deserves a biography, and Civil War buffs will be grateful to Mr. Robertson for providing a thorough account of his achievements. Outside the army, however, General Hill seems to have been a pleasant gentleman of no particular character, and his honest biographer simply cannot alter that fact.
