The Willys Dream Kit

by Jan Novak. Harcourt Brace Jovanovich. $19.95. Mr. Novak, Czechoslovakian by birth but now living in America, has written a grimly comic novel about a Czech named Jan Svoboda, which is about like being named John Smith or Ivan Ivanovich. Svoboda is a nonconformist by temperament, and to survive in his Communist country he becomes such a thoroughgoing scalawag that flight, in the end, is his only safe course. He winds up in Chicago, unreformed and unreformable. Svoboda’s progress gives Mr. Novak an opportunity to satirize both Communist and capitalist society, and he slashes these victims vigorously, savagely, and at times hilariously.
